UFC and Meta Unveil Revolutionary Meta UFC Rankings System

UFC and Meta have announced a major shift in how athlete rankings will be determined, introducing the new Meta UFC Rankings, an innovative data-driven system designed to transform fighter evaluation across the sport.

Announced on June 22, 2026, the new rankings model marks a significant departure from the traditional media voting panel that has long determined the UFC’s official rankings. Beginning immediately, the UFC will transition toward the Meta UFC Rankings, using advanced analytics and machine learning to produce objective rankings based entirely on fight data.

The new system was developed through close collaboration between UFC and Meta, with the goal of creating a rankings model that offers greater transparency, consistency, and accuracy for fighters, fans, and media alike.

UFC President and CEO Dana White has been outspoken about frustrations with the previous rankings format and believes this new approach offers a long-overdue solution.

“I’ve been unhappy with the rankings and always believed there had to be a better way,” White said. “We’ve always been a company that runs toward technology and innovation and now we’ve worked with Meta to integrate it directly into our rankings system. I’m excited to see how this innovation can help change the sport for both the fans and the athletes.”

Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Meta, also emphasized the potential impact of the new technology.

“I’m excited to work with Dana and the UFC to build a system that analyzes fighter performance at a much deeper level, helping create more transparent and accurate rankings.”

Unlike the previous system, where rankings were determined by a panel of media members, Meta UFC Rankings will be calculated automatically and updated every Monday following each official UFC event.

The system uses statistical modeling and machine learning combined with UFC’s deep competitive knowledge to evaluate fighters based on several objective metrics, including:

  • Outcome probability
  • Method of victory (finish vs. decision)
  • Fighter trajectory and momentum
  • Weight-class competitiveness and sensitivity
  • Fight recency and activity level

Importantly, not all wins and losses will carry equal value under the new model.

A dominant finish over a Top 5 opponent, for example, will significantly boost a fighter’s ranking compared to a narrow decision over an unranked competitor. The system also rewards recent performances while penalizing prolonged inactivity, ensuring rankings better reflect a fighter’s current standing in the division.

By relying solely on measurable fight data, the Meta UFC Rankings aim to remove bias and outside influence, focusing exclusively on what happens inside the Octagon.

The move represents another major step in UFC’s growing investment in technology-driven fan experiences. With debate over rankings often fueling title contention discussions, matchmaking conversations, and fan discourse, the new system is expected to generate significant discussion throughout the MMA community.

Whether fans embrace the change immediately or remain skeptical of removing the human element, one thing is certain: UFC rankings have entered a new era.
